Those who were members of the Club 18 or more years ago, when we ran our Horse Shows, will be sad to hear of the death on 24th November of Arthur Hudson. He was 96. Arthur provided much of the land and equipment we used for the shows over 25 years and was the father of the shows’ organiser and long-time Club official Graham Hudson.

Details of Rob's birthday bowls:
Book on Easyjet, flying Gatwick to Sofia - depart UK Sunday 28th Feb 0805 hrs, return from Sofia Thursday 4th March 1220hrs.

At the moment, the flights cost £61 plus £16 for a bag if required, plus ski travel insurance. You should book early because prices go up with no notice.

As a recap, the budget for the trip is:
Flights - As above
Transfers - £40 (Sofia to Bansko and back, likely to be less)
Accommodation - to be negotiated, but not too expensive. We will book with other owners in the block at good rates.
Plus one night in a "special" place I know in Sofia.
Food & drink - cheaper than UK, great restaurants with singing that will bring a tear to your eye ('cos it's awful).
Lift pass - Approx £20 per day
Ski and boot hire - approx £15 per day (snowboard similar)
Lessons if needed - approx £20 per day
To buy all ski gear if you need it - approx £100
Bowling - Not much.

All levels of bowlers and skiers are welcome, from newcomers (e.g. Tom Grist) to experts (e.g. Paul Hammond). If you want to come, then book your flights and let me know so I can sort accommodation.

Cheers,

Rob

Following their award as Team of the Year in the Borough Sports Awards, the 1st X1 was on a shortlist of three for the Team of the Year in the Surrey Sports Awards, held on 9th October. However, the award went to a team from Valley End Cricket Club, with the 1sts and a team from Woking Blackhawks Basketball Club as runners-up, for which we received a scroll.

Wed 02-Sep-09 - 1st XI Award
The Club's 1st XI has won the award for Team of the Year in the Reigate & Banstead District Sports Council awards for the year just ended.

The criteria were: A club team which has achieved success or competed at a consistently high level throughout the year and which has demonstrated fair play and a good sporting attitude.

The team's success in the year fulfilled the first criterion and the second was evidenced by a write-up from umpire Dave Harris, which formed part of the nomination.

The award will be presented at the Harlequin Theatre in the evening of Tuesday 22nd September. This is a training night and the first time our new coach will be with us, so we shall need to consider how best to deal with these two events.

Tue 25-Aug-09 - New Season
Welcome to the new season.

The 1sts have a match on Wednesday 2nd September v Horley. Otherwise the season starts on Saturday 5th September. This is a practice/training session at St Bede's at 10.30 followed by lunch.

Training then continues on Tuesdays from 8th September at 7.30 at a new venue, the Royal Alexandra & Albert School. The school has just laid a new astro. The address is Rocky Lane, Reigate RH2 0TD. The barrier inside the grounds will open when you drive up to it. Turn right after the barrier and the road leads to the pitch and the car park (see the Pitches page on the website).

The Club's coach Ray has gone back to Zimbabwe for the time being. We have a new coach, Ant Rapson, who is currently working in New Zealand. He will lead training from Tuesday 22nd September.

Saturday matches start on 12th September.

The 1st XI home games will be at St Bede's at 10.30. The 2nd XI and 3rd XI home games will be at either St Bede's at 10.30 or the Royal Alexandra & Albert at 1.00 pm. Details of the games are on Fixture pages of the website (http://www.orhc.info/fixtures. The League has again been reorganised and is now in six divisions. The 1st XI are in the Premier division, the 2nd XI in division 3 and the 3rd XI in division 5.

For matches at the RA&A, lunch will be at the School. For matches at St Bede's, there may be a change of lunch venue. The Garland is not now providing food on Saturdays, although we can bring in our own (somebody would have to buy it all) and use the room. For lunch on 5th September we are going to the Toby Carvery by Redhill station, as arranged with them, to see what they can offer.

Please try to be at the practice on the 5th. All are welcome. Please bring along any new players, as this is an ideal opportunity for those who want to take up hockey, as we may work on building a youth squad over the next few seasons.

For those under 18, we should need parental consent to playing. There is a form on the website. Please click on the Active Surrey logo and download item 7b. Junior Membership Form and ask them to bring it along filled in (but without the subscription yet).

I know we only play hockey (and not all that well in the Summer!?), but we do have an ace website.

Yours modestly,

PS. The stats for last season have not yet been loaded into the 'Archive' section yet. This is because Andy Warr has conned me into transposing his super spreadsheets and back of fag packet records of the glorious past of OR hockey onto the website. Watch this space...

News from our old friend Stuart McKay: Retired from goalkeeping a couple of seasons ago due to a persistent hip problem and spent the rest of that season in defence. Then qualified as an umpire and for the last couple of seasons. I’m an EHA qualified level 1 umpire and looking to take level 2 in the Summer.

Here’s more news that may astound you, I’m getting married. You may remember Vicky from the last awards dinner I came to when I was still playing for the OR’s but it’s time I made an honest woman of her ;) In fact, it’s 2 months today…

But will she make an honest man of you, Stuart? Haha!
